In MS Project, custom WBS Code definition can be automated by combining Outline Codes that are already part of the definition of the planned project tasks. This minimises data entry effort and errors.
Here is an example to illustrate how tasks are related to the WBS, and viewed together on the same page. This is only available through such customisation.
The WBS Levels are separated by colons “:” or dashes “-” as per below table, which shows where the activity to “Order Street Lights” for a Bridge Project fits within the WBS.
Level | eg. WBS D:C:0-11:E-C:0(49) | Represents | In this example |
0 | D: | Project | Bridge Project |
1 | C: | Stage | Implementation |
2 | 0- | Substage | Procurement |
3 | 11: | Element | Services |
4 | E- | Subelement | Electrical |
5 | C:0 | Organisation (within Project Hierarchy) | General Contractor |
6 | (49) | Activity ID | Order Street Lights |
Other information such as work effort can also be viewed to validate the “100% rule”.
